Hello, and welcome to the Manic Writer! Today is WIPpet Wednesday, a blog hop in which we post a portion of our Work In Progress that relates to the date somehow. For instance, today is 12-21-2016 so I could post 12 words from the 21st page. Each week I’ll tell you the messed up math that I used to decide what to post. You’ll get a good sense of how little math and I get along. If you love WIPpet Wednesday then check out the #wippeters on Twitter and follow this link for even more fun!
Today I will be sharing a bit from the web novella I am preparing to publish in January, Divorced White Female. If you like what you read head on over and subscribe for chapters in your inbox as they are published.
Today I multiplied 12 by 21 which came to 252. I’m sharing a little more than that since I didn’t want to cut out any important stuff but it’s close to 252 words.
Context: It’s New Year’s Eve and Lylah’s resolution is to start over after spending the last eighteen months healing from her divorce. Her friend’s husband has introduced her to an old university friend of his named David who is everything Lylah doesn’t want in her new man. Ben is her friend’s husband whom she is seeking safety with.
I sigh and accept Ben’s arm, turning towards the doorway without stopping to say goodnight to David. In the corner of my eye, I see him step forward as his fleshy fingers close on my upper arm. He applies enough pressure that I can’t twist out of it and I have to stop and turn to face him, preventing Ben from moving forward also.
“Love, let me escort you.” His eyes twinkle and I hope it’s because he’s drunk on the champagne and frenzy of New Year’s eve.
I’m not taking any chances, though, and I’m certainly not letting a stranger escort me to my room. I’m naive and maybe a little desperate. I wasn’t born yesterday. My reply is frosty and sharp. “Not on your life.” I release Ben’s arm to pry his fingers off me, thankful that I’m not likely to see him again after tonight.
As I turn to leave again he leans in, the music pauses and I feel his hot breath on my ear. “Ah, love a challenge. You’ll find I don’t give up easily.”
My hand is firmly set in Ben’s elbow. I don’t need his escort, I feel perfectly safe in his home, but I’m thankful for it. I look back over my shoulder, David’s watching me, hands shoved deep his pockets and his head tilted to one side. When our eyes meet he winks at me and I get the feeling he’s not the type to take no for an answer and that I haven’t seen the last of him. I narrow my eyes and stare back coldly, challenge accepted. This is my year, the year of Lylah. A fresh start for me, a chance to repair the bad decisions and reinvent myself. A new beginning, a new me and hopefully, a new man.
So there it is. My first WIPpet Wednesday submission! I’ll grant you the math is a little sketchy but hey, I warned you that math and I were not friends. Maybe I’ll get better doing this blog hop. Yeah, probably not. I hope you enjoyed yourself and will come back for more. I’ll be posting these every Wednesday throughout the year. Don’t forget to check out the other WIPpet Wednesday submissions here.
