EA Copen is a time traveler who’s been writing since she was three. She exists, not only on our timeline, but also in Ancient Rome where she’s called Pompeia Furia.

EA Copen is a breakout Indie author of 2016.
She’s the author of four books with a fifth and sixth set for release later this year. In 2016 she published her first book on April 1, her second book on July 8 and her third on November 4. Let me reassure you, they are all powerhouses that will keep your eyes glued to the pages as you stay up long past your bedtime. I got a chance to chat with her for a bit and this is what I learned about her. Sit down, pour yourself a drink, wine if you want to join her in ancient Rome while you visit, and enjoy getting to know an Indie author that is well worth your time.
Some people are just born to be authors.
Copen knew when she was three. She grew up in the foster system and her experiences fuel her stories. She writes about the people who fall through the cracks of the government organizations that don’t always protect those they are designed to help. Each of her books is designed around a theme that relates to that, straight from her heart and her own life experience.
How does she do it?
I knew you’d want to know, so I asked.
Since her stories come from real life she usually jots down a two sentence summary of the book she has in mind, making sure her protagonist has clear goals. Then she blocks off two hour sessions, early and late afternoon to get it done. She’ll participate in NaNoWriMo if she feels like it but because she writes all the time the 50K goal isn’t as much of a challenge. It’s more the camaraderie of doing it as a team that encourages her as she encourages others on their own writing journey.
What about being an Indie?
Copen is an extraordinary encourager. She says, to new indie authors especially, don’t be afraid to ask. She was and it was her decision to be willing to “look stupid” that got her moving. She wants to remind potential Indies that there are no stupid questions. All Indie authors have been there and many are more than happy to help.
She admits that the Indie author road is a crazy one but she loves it. On being an Indie she says she chose it because her books are weird, and she’s a control freak. She didn’t want her creative dream being hijacked. She definitely didn’t want “a shirtless guy or half-naked woman with sparkly hands” on the cover. She writes a mix of urban fantasy, weird west and dystopia that’s hard to market to a traditional publisher.
She has found her second family within the Indie author community and says it’s the best thing ever. She loves the interaction she has with other authors and she loves that there’s no barrier between her and her fans. She’s always willing to take a minute and talk with a fan about their favorite part. And she’s always thankful for their appreciation. She’s also thankful for the many members of the community that have stepped up and been there for her when she needed a helping hand.

EA Copen currently has four books out for your reading pleasure. If you already own Guilty by Association and win the sweepstakes, let me know. I’ll gladly substitute a kindle book of hers that you don’t own yet.
The Judah Black Novels include Guilty by Association, Blood Debt, Chasing Ghosts. “Life is the best inspiration.” – EA Copen
Blood Debt is about the price we put on a life, written while she faced a debt she couldn’t pay.
Chasing Ghosts deals with the realities we face when we deny the demons from our past even as they chase us down.
“Life is the best inspiration.” – EA Copen
She also has The Fairchild Chronicles: Kiss of Vengeance, set in the Judah Black world, in a different setting and different characters, though a couple background characters do show up for cameos. Kiss of Vengeance is about finding a purpose after a profound loss.
She’s preparing to release Beasts of Babylon, a paranormal western similar to Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. It follows Anastasia Thorne, a woman who can’t stay dead, Jesse Gallagher, an outlaw who can see 6 seconds into the future, and Christian Thorne whose magic Peacemakers never miss. Together they go in search of a sinister werewolf and a skin-stealing monster.
Copen has made the decision to become a hybrid author, part Indie and part publisher, by signing with a micropublisher. Sign up for her newsletter and watch for the announcement and release dates of another book, Broken Empire!
