“Every kid in Fall River heard about the monster showing up around town and scaring people, but Grandpa’s story has always felt like it was true.
The monster had been Wampanoag just like Grandpa, a young woman out for revenge against the Pilgrims. She wasn’t a fighter, but she had brains so she went into the woods and came back a monster. The story used to fascinate Leo, but he hadn’t really believed someone could want revenge that badly. He’d been wrong. If that lady monster were here right now, he’d have more than a few questions for her.”

Today I’m reviewing A Change In Crime (La Famiglia di Mostri Book 1) by D.R. Perry, who will also be the focus of my June Indie BLT Spotlight. A Change in Crime is a historical paranormal crime story, an alternate history about the mob and how monsters regulated mobster activities during prohibition.
D.R. Perry lives in Rhode Island, where all her books are set. Although she’s not a native New Englander, once up north she got so inspired she couldn’t leave. A wild Northern Muse attacked. D.R. used Typing; it was Super Effective. D.R. hopes you have as much fun reading her books as she did writing them. She can be found on Facebook, and Twitter and at her blog, D.R. Perry.
A Change in Crime is set in New England, in Fall River MA during the prohibition era. At first glance it is a tale about a boy and the mobsters who killed his family. Upon closer examination it is so much more.
Leo comes home from trying to enlist in the army and finds his house in flames, mobsters outside it discussing the hit and all that he knows is gone. Though he must run for his own life because he hears them talking about finding him and finishing the job, it isn’t long before he comes up with a plan for redemption. One that you will never see coming.
His adventures as he seeks revenge for his family will open up a world to both him and you that will twist and turn through the centuries and tell many stories, not just Leo’s.
Although crime isn’t a genre I typically read I read this for both it’s paranormal elements and because I’ve read other books by Perry and I trust her to tell me a good story. I wasn’t disappointed. It’s action packed but somehow Perry doesn’t leave the emotion behind. She lets you get wrapped up in her characters; Leo, Oguina, Pearl, Sampson, and Bersi.
Sometimes an author can place a cube in front of you, with preconceived notions on it and then spin it so you see the backside of those notions. Perry does just that with her story.
The monsters are the heroes of her story, the ones trying to set things right, though they aren’t the only good guys. Of course this doesn’t mean they always succeed, but I loved that she took something normally feared and showed us the good in them.
If you haven’t read her newest story then watch for my Indie BLT Spotlight this month and enter to win a free copy of it. If you have then leave her a review and let her know you loved it!
